Overview

​B.Pharm is an under graduate degree awarded for the completion of a 4 year program in the area of Pharmacy. B.Pharm is a shortened form of Bachelor of Pharmacy. Pharmacy Council of India is the controlling authority of the Indian Pharmacy education. PCI is a legal body ruled by the provisions of the Pharmacy Act 1948 along with AICTE as apex body. B.Pharm enables a candidate to practice a professional career as a Pharmacis

B.Pharm course will cover a syllabus including health care, Pharmaceutical, Life Sciences and biochemical science. The program covers practical experiments along with theory classes. Many reputed institutes and universities in India and abroad provide B.Pharm course.

First year/SemisterB.Pharm course is inter professional and taken with students from other health sciences degrees. In the following they will study pharmacy primary care, pharmaceutics,Pharmachemistry, antimicrobial chemotherapy, pharmacology, pharmacotherapy and pharmaceutical practice

There will be a minimum of 12 weeks of clinical/Industry placements during the course. There are opportunities for them to take their your placements interstate and overseas in hospitals, the community or in industry.

Advantages and benifits of bachelor of pharmacy

• B.Pharm graduates can study a Post graduation in Pharmacy that is offered in various specializations. Some of them are Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology, Pharmachemistry, Pharmacognosy etc.
• After the completion of the program, candidates can register with the State Pharmacy Council. This will qualify them for starting a Pharmacy or Chemist store of their own. Therefore, they can stock and sell the medicines.
• While pharmacists often work in community and hospital pharmacies, they can also work in areas such as research and development, participating in activities ranging from drug discovery and formulation, to assessing the therapeutic benefits of different drugs.
• They can work in
• Pharmaceutical industry in Production, QA,QC, Marketing departments work in areas such as marketing, sales, or research and development. They may design or conduct clinical drug trials and help to develop new drugs. They may also help to establish safety regulations and ensure quality control for drugs.
•  Consultant pharmacists advise healthcare facilities or insurance providers on patient medication use or improving pharmacy services. They also may give advice directly to patients, such as helping seniors manage their prescriptions

• Hospital as Hospital Pharmacist, Clinical Pharmacist and Community Pharmacist
• Community pharmacists work in retail stores such as chain drug stores or independently owned pharmacies. They dispense medications to patients and answer any questions that patients may have about prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, or any health concerns that the patient may have. They also may provide some primary care services such as giving flu shots.
•  Clinical pharmacists work in hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare settings. They spend little time dispensing prescriptions. Instead, they are involved in direct patient care. Clinical pharmacists may go on rounds in a hospital with a physician or healthcare team. They recommend medications to give to patients and oversee the dosage and timing of the delivery of those medications. They also may conduct some medical tests and offer advice to patients. For example, pharmacists working in a diabetes clinic may counsel patients on how and when to take medications, suggest healthy food choices, and monitor patients’ blood sugar.

What pharmacist do?

Pharmacists dispense prescription medications to patients and offer expertise in the safe use of prescriptions. They also may conduct health and wellness screenings, provide immunizations, oversee the medications given to patients, and provide advice on healthy lifestyles.

• Fill prescriptions, verifying instructions from physicians on the proper amounts of medication to give to patients
• Check whether prescriptions will interact negatively with other drugs that a patient is taking or any medical conditions the patient has
• Instruct patients on how and when to take a prescribed medicine and inform them about potential side effects they may experience from taking the medicine
• Give flu shots and, in most states, other vaccinations
• Advise patients about general health topics, such as diet, exercise, and managing stress, and on other issues, such as what equipment or supplies would be best to treat a health problem
• Complete insurance forms and work with insurance companies to ensure that patients get the medicines they need
• Oversee the work of pharmacy technicians and pharmacists in training (interns)
• Keep records and do other administrative tasks
• Teach other healthcare practitioners about proper medication therapies for patients

Some pharmacists who own their pharmacy or manage a chain pharmacy spend time on business activities, such as inventory management. Pharmacists also must take continuing education courses throughout their career to keep up with the latest advances in pharmacological science.

With most drugs, pharmacists use standard dosages from pharmaceutical companies. However, some pharmacists create customized medications by mixing ingredients themselves, a process known as compounding.

Modern pharmacy profession has number of ways to mould the career. Pharmacist with a Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharmacy) certificate is limited to provide services as

• Government Pharmacist (Government hospital, Primary health care centres, Army, Indian Air force, Railway, Navy, Space etc.)
• Clinical & Community Pharmacist (Retail Pharmacy shop/Medical Shop).
• Medical representatives
• Pharmacist in chain of pharmacies (Apollo, Medplus etc).
• Repacking units in Pharma Industry
• Lab technician/lab assistants in Pharmacy Colleges.
• They can pursue higher education like B.Pharmacy etc.
